The people of Gibsons Landing cordially invite you to visit their unique waterfront community - the gateway to the Sunshine Coast and the home of the internationally acclaimed CBC television series The Beachcombers. This charming village sits at the northwest corner of Howe Sound, just where it breaks out into the Strait of Georgia. The soaring coastal mountains create a magnificent backdrop to the Landing and the nearby islands. A public wharf dominates the scene, home to the local fishing fleet and Molly's Reach of The Beachcombers. The town of Gibsons has just completed a "revitalization" of the Landing, providing wider streets, west coast landscaping, period street lighting and easier access.
You can walk along the seawall to watch the wide variety of pleasure craft and working boats plying Gibsons Harbour. Log booms drift by towed by powerful tugs heading for the mill at Port Mellon. Prawn and fish boats sell their fresh catch in season at the public wharf.
If the urge to get out on the water strikes, you can book a sightseeing tour, rent a kayak for a lesson or a tour or go sailing or fishing on a local charter boat. There are also great hiking and mountain bike trails nearby. A popular local trail takes the adventurer to the top of Soames Hill for a breathtaking view of Howe Sound and Georgia Strait.
Local beaches offer great swimming and picnic spots, and the village features a public tennis court and playgrounds. The Sunshine Coast Maritime Museum and the Elphinstone Pioneer Museum offer the visitor an opportunity to explore the area's intriguing history. The new Gibsons and District Public Library provides for great reading and a view of the harbour you won't want to miss.
The Coast is home to a large community of artists and artisans whose work reflects the beauty and inspiration of the environment. Their creations can be discovered in the local galleries and in their own studios. Many of our artists, artisans and writers are known both locally and world wide. Take this opportunity to see their work and perhaps get to meet the artists themselves.
The Landing itself offers the visitor the chance to wander through quaint village shops, galleries, book stores and small markets. Slow down and experience village life in an area designed for strolling and discovery. When it's time for a relaxing meal, the Landing's restaurants and cafes offer everything from falafel and seafood to sushi or homemade Canadian and European cuisine. Sleep well in a local bed and breakfast or motel and enjoy the delight of waking up with a view of the harbour and the sounds of the village.
The Landing is your introduction and gateway to all pleasures and beauty of the surrounding area. The Sunshine Coast is an eco-paradise for hiking, kayaking, boating, camping, trailbiking, photographing and just relaxing and reconnecting with the earth, the water and the wind. |
